TYPES OF CORONARY ANGIOPLASTY

Coronary angioplasty is a life-saving procedure used to open blocked arteries and restore blood flow to the heart. This procedure is a common treatment for coronary artery disease, which is caused by the buildup of plaque in the arteries. There are two main types of coronary angioplasty that can be performed depending on the specific needs of the patient.

Balloon angioplasty uses a small balloon to open the blocked artery. Once the balloon is positioned at the site of the blockage, it is inflated to push the plaque against the artery walls. This opens up the artery and improves blood flow to the heart. Although this method effectively clears blockages, there is a risk that the artery may narrow again over time, which is why it is sometimes used in conjunction with a stent.

Stent angioplasty involves the placement of a small, expandable metal mesh tube (called a stent) into the artery. The stent remains in place to keep the artery open after the balloon is deflated and removed. This method is commonly used because the stent helps to prevent re-narrowing of the artery, offering a more long-term solution.
